Course Objectives: This course will present a detailed analysis
of methods for numerically approximating the solution of partial
differential equations. Both the mathematical theory and practical
implementation of competing approaches for a set of standard PDE's
will be covered. The students will be introduced to
mathematical and computational issues that must be considered when
designing or choosing a numerical method for the nonlinear
PDE's typically found in physical applications.
By the end of the course, students should be able to
- understand the mathematical foundations of numerical methods for PDEs
- construct numerical methods for simple PDEs
- understand and analyze numerical error
- write effective presentations of numerical results
Class notes, assignments, and downloads will be available
from the UNC Blackboard system
